The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Unbound 40L Ultralight backpack is a relatively new piece of equipment (as of this writing).
If you’ve been following the channel (and blog), you know I’m not typically inclined to do reviews of gear that I haven’t had a chance to use for a reasonable amount of time. But, this isn’t a gear review. This is a gear modification. And you probably know that I really enjoy customizing gear for our specific needs, as witnessed by recent video on creating a “cheater stick” for sport climbing.
I like thinking through the pseudo-engineering side of things, whether that be gear or rope systems or whatever. Emphasis on “pseudo,” however. I’m not much of a “do it from scratch” kind of guy, if I’m honest. Unless it’s planning a climb to some far-off peak, I just don’t really take on too many multi-day projects like most true DIYs need to be.
But that happy middle ground between “built from scratch” and “completely store bought”? Well, count me in.
I like having the opportunity to think through the design elements of my potential solution.
I like finding the right pieces and parts (and you can find the parts needed for the build described in this video by following the links, below).
I like putting the initial prototype together.
Heck, I like seeing design or build failures that demand a rethink.
Maybe it’s the “gear head” part of me. Maybe it’s just the joy of having a vision and seeing it become reality… kind of like a climb to some far-off peak.
