It's hard to find kids' outdoor gear and clothing that can perform, hold up to their hard use, and allow your kids to grow. After one year of climbing, hiking, backpacking, and camping with our twin boys, our video provides a review of what has proven to be a stellar pant. The Reima Broby is a quality piece of gear that we won't hesitate to buy, again. Why? Read on.

Our boys move. A lot. They are constantly on the move. They are also bold. And they get into things. Sometimes looking before they leap can be a challenge.

And, so, when it came to finding them an outdoor pant, we needed something that could move with them and stand up to the abuse they give to… well, everything. We were looking for something tough, but tough comes at a price. And a higher price is a hard thing to swallow for growing kids who may only wear a piece of clothing for one season. So, we when heard about Reima and their reputation for adjustability, they made the premium quality more attractive; if the kids could get multiple years out of the thing, it may be worth it.

We do a lot of climbing and scrambling; the give in the softshell fabric makes it less likely to tear on abrasive surfaces (although, more likely to snag on protrusions.) But, like I allude to above, the give also provides excellent freedom of movement.

In addition, we had previously bought a Reima softshell jacket, the Reima Vantti, and we were impressed with the quality and durability of the fabric.

So, looking at the price, the durability and adjustability (it doesn’t make sense to have adjustability for multiple years if the durability isn’t there) made the value for us.

Finally, there was just familiarity. I have quite a few softshell pants, myself, and they are my go-to layers for stuff I do in the alpine. I have some very light hiking pants that aren’t softshell, but those really only come out in the middle of summer. The rest of the time I need a pant that can both trap heat and shed it. I need water resistance without losing all breathability. I need to be able to flex and straighten and move without infringement. Being familiar with softshells and their versatility, I was hoping to find one for the boys.

(For what it’s worth, my favorite softshell pant - for me, rather than my kids - is the Mammut Eisfeld Guide SO Pants.)

So, now we have a multi-year pant that is versatile enough to be on our kids for just about every adventure. We couldn’t have hoped for better.
