Winter Gear We Take When Mountaineering, Hiking, and Snowshoeing with the Kids

It’s hard to write more to a “load out” video. After all, the point of the video is to go through everything we take with us on an outing (in this case, a winter day trip), and so I talk about why I have certain gear with me as I narrate. Now, of course, each piece of gear could be talked about ad nauseam, as well. And a six-plus minute video can’t go into the type of detail that a video can which focuses on one particular piece or system of gear. So, I guess my goal for this blog post (as it supports the video) is to be quick to the point and provide the gear list that I promised within the video narration, but also provide just a few additional resources for deeper dives into some of the topics.

On the “additional resources” front, I think I’d call out:

• this link to my video and post about gear we specifically take snowshoeing because it goes into greater detail on how the “ten essentials” came about and how outdoors-people think about them today;

• a whole series of videos (five of them) done to prepare you for cold and snowy backcountry adventures

  • on clothing, getting into more details on the mechanics of clothing systems and how to get garments to work together and work for you well

  • on movement techniques and making the right gear decisions to ensure your traction on different types of surfaces

  • on ways you can manage yourself to maximize your warmth

  • an introduction to avalanche education with a heavy emphasis on links to ways to further this important part of outdoors education

  • and on keeping morale up for yourself and your partners and any kids you may have along with you

So, hopefully those additional videos and blogs weave together to build a better overall picture of winter backcountry adventuring, and provides foundational context for this episode and why we carry what we carry.
